MEF Helps Low Income Students & Parents to Build Character During Crisis

Supplementing Remote Learning With Free Virtue-Building Lessons and Resources

Chicago, IL: Midtown Educational Foundation (MEF), a Chicago non-profit dedicated to helping underserved students achieve academic and character excellence, today announced a new remote learning campaign, MEF At Home. MEF At Home is a hub of online resources aimed at  providing low-income families a free supplement to their school’s remote learning with virtue-based lessons, in both English and Spanish, to help combat the negative social and psychological effects of the pandemic.

Our Centers may be closed, but we are still focused on our mission to serve and support our families. The MEF At Home campaign gives us the ability to open our doors, virtually, to other low-income families who might be struggling in similar ways.
— Erin Aldrich, Director of MEF’s Metro Achievement Center for girls.

MEF At Home will consist of:

  • A constantly updated website with curated content focused on character and academic development for students, as well as support resources for parents.

  • Ongoing challenges and lessons in virtue, which will be posted on MEF’s social media pages, to mobilize families into action and to develop an awareness of the need to serve and care for each other, while all at home 24/7.

  • Live character talks and group chats featuring MEF staff and volunteers as well as short pre-recorded video check-ins.

  • Select resources for both Spanish-speaking families as well as students without access to reliable internet or mobile devices.

  • Individual mentoring options for currently enrolled students.

We are not trying to compete with the virtual learning plans of schools. Instead, we want to fill the void that is left from the lack of after-school activities that provide positive outlets for children to grow as virtuous men and women.
— Peter Ladwein, MEF’s Director of Midtown Center for boys.

MEF At Home will be offered for free starting April 6th.  For more information, visit https://www.midtown-metro.org/athomeresources
