23rd Annual Metro Achievement Council Luncheon reaches big heights

On Thursday, March 5, members of the Metro Achievement Council (MAC) hosted the 23rd Annual MAC Luncheon at the Union League Club of Chicago. The luncheon successfully raised over $99,000 to support under served youth in Chicago. MEF Board member, Mary Presberg, led the luncheon as EMCEE and started off the event by recognizing MAC council members, Metro staff and volunteers.

Throughout the event, attendees heard from Metro Achievement Center student, Sarah Alvarez. Alvarez, a senior at Lincoln Park High School, shared her experience at Metro and its impact on her education.

“I am grateful for all the help Metro has provided in giving me the tools to be a successful student but Metro has done so much more. Personally, it has helped me believe in myself and understand the core of my confidence, my own dignity,” Alvarez said.

Starting in the MAP program for 7th & 8th-grade students, Alvarez is now in the College Orientation program.

“Entering the doors that first day, Metro left an impression on me. I was welcomed with open arms and made part of a loving family. People knew my name, my story, cared about my academics, but more importantly, about me as a person,” Alvarez said.

Following Alvarez was the luncheon’s featured speaker, Corlis Murray, Abbott’s Senior Vice President, Quality Assurance, Regulatory and Engineering Services. Murray discussed the importance of providing opportunities for professional growth for young students in all fields, including engineering. Similar to Metro’s apprenticeship program, Abbott offers a STEM internship program for underserved high school students.

All proceeds from the event went to support the mission of the Midtown Educational Foundation, guiding low-income urban youth in Chicago along pathways of success.
