MEF's Impact on Chicago Education

We believe that MEF is part of the solution for Chicago education.
-
Mayor Emanuel calls for more parent engagement. MEF believes that parents are the primary educators of their children and provides strong parent support and mentorship.
-
CPS creates a longer school day for additional enrichment. MEF also adds an extra 35 minutes to the school day (at least 3 hours/week) in a diverse setting outside of school.
-
MEF complements the University of Chicago Consortium's 5 Pillars:
(1) Instructional Leadership
(2) Adequate Professional Support
(3) Ambitious Instruction
(4) Good Learning Climate
(5) Strong Family / Community Ties

Alumni Spotlight
MEF welcomes Carlos Martinez as Senior Programs Assistant at Midtown Center for boys
"I was six years old when my family came to Chicago from Mexico. We somehow ended up in Little Italy, which was the best thing to ever happen to us. Little Italy is where we discovered Midtown Center for Boys.
I was always conscious of the well- being of my younger brothers, Jose and Omar, and strived to excel academically as an example to them. Midtown laid the foundation that we needed to become successful men. As a participant in Midtown’s enrichment programs I was prepared to take on the academic challenges at Northridge Prep. I was fortunate to attend one of the state’s top high schools, graduating in 1992. I later went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree from DePaul University as a Communications major.
My professional career has always involved working with our youth to pave the way of their academic success at the post-secondary level. For five years I served as a Program Specialist for Educational Talent Search Program (TRIO) at Robert Morris College to help our youth achieve their goal of going to college. The experience at Robert Morris College helped me to take on another challenge at the UIC College of Medicine. At UIC I worked with underrepresented minority students who were interested in the field of medicine.
I am blessed to be married to my beautiful wife Nelli with whom I have two 2 boys, Marcos and Diego. I look forward now to contributing to Midtown’s success in preparing young men for a bright future."
